Yearbook with Hannah

3

Aloha!! It’s Hannah here today.

Do you you ever have a story to tell that needs lots of space for journaling but you also have a bit of photos you want to use to highlight your story? What do you choose to do? This is where my brain says double page layout. I really like to give the photos room to breathe and leave lots of space to handwrite  my story without worry that I will run out of room.

I know double pages aren’t all that popular anymore. We often have this concept in our mind of what they should look like or we are worried about filling all that space. If they aren’t your jam, that is fine too. I also want to remind you the cool thing about allowing your story and your photos come together to fit your style and rearrange how you think double pages can look like.

IMG_9013

I used the Malibu Main August Kit to make my layout today.  I also am cutting each side to 8 1/2 by 11. I am thinking this change in size will be a nice change in my album but also not feel so daunting as I feel the space.

I start with 2 pieces of white card stock, I like to start off with something empty and crisp. I edged one side with some bright purple chalk ink. I wanted to add a touch of color because I knew on the first side I was using the gorgeous sunset water paper.

IMG_9014.jpg

I am not gonna lie, this paper is gorgeous and it saddened me to cut it down, but I knew it really would fit my spread better this way. One this first sheet I stitched some weird zig zag stitches. I carried it through to the other side by adding a strip of the sunset paper underneath it.

IMG_9012.jpg

Adding the stitching all the way across will tie the layouts together to help tell a cohesive story.

The photos from each side are from a different place, I wanted it to be contrasting against each other as well. I layered some papers under the photos on the second side.

The first side I layered some of the embellishments from the kIt together to fit nicely near the start of the title.

IMG_9016

The little squares from the speciality paper are my favorite. I used them all over my layout. IMG_9015.jpg

I really wanted my second page really simple so I could do my journaling on this page. I added a little bit of Shimmerz Creamez in pink and purple. The shimmer in the paint is so pretty but subtle that it really enhances the words that are written over top.

IMG_9011.jpg

I mixed thickers from the August Main Kit with leftover Thickers from last month’s kit. They work so well together and the both really pick up on the colors in this kit. I wanted my title to run across both sides of the double page spread. I wanted to make sure though, that when the pages were separate they could stand on their own too.

IMG_9018.jpg

I had fun adding the hologram phrase stickers through out the layout.

Here is a look at the full double page spread.

Goodbye Hawaii CK Footer.jpg

I really wanted my story and the few photos to do the focus. Little details like leaving room for the journaling and using my title to help tell my story really ties everything together.

Check out my process video and see me make this fun double page spread.

I hope that you are inspired to really use your photos and experiences to help tell your stories on your layouts. I also hope you share them online and use our hashtag #cliquekits so we can see your projects with your Clique Kits.

Aloha!! It’s Hannah with you today. I can’t wait to share my layout with you. I have been really playing with my mixed media products lately. Maybe it’s all the color coming back with all the spring flowers that is making me want more color on my pages.

I am using the June Aquarelle Kit which features the Cocoa Vanilla Studio Wild at Heart Collection.

june kit

This kit is so dreamy. It reminded me of my Lilac bush that is now just starting to sport blossoms. That really was my inspiration for my layout today. I would say 80 % of the time my photos or things around me in which make me take their photo inspire me and then make their way to my layouts.

IMG_5777

I started off by trying out brush script so I could make a home made cut file and title. I cut them out with the Grow Wild paper from the main kit. I love this dark color with pops of pink and blue flowers. Even though it doesn’t really have purple in it I knew it would work well with purple.

IMG_5856

I also cut out the May Challenge cut file that Maryam designed. I love the triangle design and it is so versatile. I also really wanted to use the cut file like a stencil for some mixed media. Cut files are a really good to have stencils. You just have to remember that if you cut it from paper that if you use really wet media it could rip the paper or seep through or under the stencil.

I watered down some acrylic paint in purple, and dabbed the paint brush so it looked like lilacs a little. I did this 4 or 5 small spots on the 12×12 white card stock. I also added another piece of card stock underneath my cut piece so that I would have the top part and negative space of triangles.

IMG_5861

I knew I wanted to use the top piece that was cut but I could save the other piece for another layout design. Since I already have my media out and it needs time to dry this saves me a little bit of time down the road.

IMG_5854

I used some Shimmerz Pasteez in Puttin’ on the Glitz and Raspberry Sorbet in splotches with my palette knife to create texture. Then sprayed some of the Coloringz on my mixed media areas. I really want to build layers of media in these spots. This is the key to getting great mixed media layouts. I let my media air dry, I didn’t use gesso on this layout and more water or liquid absorbed into my cardstock. If I used a heat gun that would make my paper warp a lot more than it will if I let it air dry over night.

It really is hard to wait for it to dry, which is why I like to do my media in stages. It helps me feel like I got something accomplished when I sit down in my scrap room.

IMG_5860

Next I used my Acri-tonz and dropped the Navy and White on my background. I really love the texture and dimension this paint has when it dries. Also this bottle is perfect for squeezing and dropping the perfect size dots over my layout.

To add a little more texture on my layout I added lots of stitching on my photo and on the side of my layout. I love how this zig zag looks over the side of the photo and through the exclusive printable from the Traveler’s Notebook Kit. The white gel pen pops off that black. Layered with some copper thread, the exclusive flair and main kit exclusive printable adds a nice cluster over top one of my mixed media spots. the media is peeking through the lines of the layering and really brings out the color of the lilacs on my photo.

IMG_5862.jpg

I think my favorite part of this layout is this title with all the different fonts. My own brush script turned into a cut file, the cut apart from the patterned paper in the main kit, and the copper alpha’s from Pink Fresh Studio all with some stitching through them. It just adds that statement I was looking for.

I started the title with more exclusive printable banners and some of the Add-on enamel dots. I also ended the title with the Maggie Holmes puffy hearts from a couple months ago.

IMG_5863

With a little extra thought you can use your mixed media to tie into your kit and make a unique and awesome layout. Use as much or as little as you feel comfortable. Play around and see what exclusive cut files make the best stencils. With your creative imagination the sky is the limit!!

Art Studio With Hannah

Art Studio

Aloha!! Today I am going to sharing the double page spread that I made for the May Challenge, which is to use gold, mixed media and the sketch and cute file that Maryam created. I am also using the May Sorbet Kit.  Here is a look at the Sketch again.

17904058_654355728082599_7784339191730400555_n

I started out by using the cut file in my Silhouette with a gold sketch pen. After I decided it wasn’t bright enough so I went over it with a green gold jelly roll pen. I the green will go well with my picture.

I decided from the start that I wanted to put a spin on this sketch and cut file. I resize the file to fit inside an 8 and 1/2 layout. I also took a couple of rows of triangles off the cut file. This will help my triangles to fit mostly on the right side.

I also knew I wanted to use one really large photo. I really wanted it to fill up most of the patterned paper so only a bit sticks out. Then I add some Shimmerz Paste-eez with a stencil on the bottom right side and the top left side.

IMG_5422

I added some of the die cuts from the May Sorbet Kit along with some of the exclusive printables. I use a mix of the pieces from the Main kit printables  and the exclusive printables for the Traveler’s Notebook Kit.

I layered the mixed media right on the photo. I really wanted it draw you eye to the photo and from the bottom to the top. Using a green colored modeling paste also helped it not stick out but blend and work with the colors of the photo.

I did this for the top and the bottom. Using different shaped and sizes in the layered embellishments helps tie everything together.

IMG_5423

A little gold thread adds some more gold and some texture. By mirroring some of the same shapes and colors in both embellishment clusters it helps create a cohesive look.

I do this with the second page of this double spread. I punch out a few circles and look for some die-cut triangles and circle.

IMG_5427.jpg

On this second side I add more Shimmerz Paste-eez on top of the big triangles. I tried to be aware of directions of the small triangles too. I wanted them to look layered and not a little chaotic.

On top of the white card stock I spritzed my Shimmerz spray in green, blue and coral. These colors are similar to ones in the Pink Fresh Studio Dream On Collection in the Kit.

The mix of big and little drops look really similar to watercolor. I didn’t use gesso, this did make my sprays warp the card stock, but I wanted my sprays to dry faster and not move around o the page too much.

IMG_5429.jpg

I used the basic design of the Sketch Maryam created. I have layered pattern pieces for the middle of my layout. I add a cut apart piece from the Kit. I loved finding papers just work perfectly together to form edges around the big cluster. I am using this for journaling instead of a photo. Since I already have a big photo, I didn’t feel I needed another photo.

This photo of the woods on my drive around the area, is one of my favorite views, Especially now that it is spring and all the trees are coming back to life and standing really tall.

I add some of the Pink Fresh Studio gold mirror pieces around my journaling. This add on and more are in the May Kit Section. I hope you check them out and purchase what you want to add to your kit. These little things help add more life to your kit.

IMG_5425.jpg

I used dimensional adhesive to give shadows under the layers. It also helps still show the mixed media I did on the background. After all the fun work I did, to cover it all would be a same.

IMG_5428

I added my title about the main cluster instead of below. I also had the main cluster a little lower on the page. I use the Gold Thickers from the Kit along with some Doodlebug Design blue tile alpha’s. I like how this blue picks on the blue spray not the background.

IMG_5426

These bird circles are so cute and remind me of nature, and their singing in the forest. They go perfect with my picture. I love how Maryam matched the Printable to the puffy stickers and die cuts in the kit.

Again I made sure to use similar shapes on both sides of my double page spread. It helps it flow together and feel like one layout inside of two sides, even though they are clearly different.

Here is a look at my finished spread. It really shows the vast and tall trees that I am surrounded by everyday, and I feel so lucky to experience them.

Field Notes: Follow Your Rainbow or Sunset

field-notes

Aloha My scrappy Friends!! It’s Hannah with you today. When I started scrapbooking I was hooked on Mixed Media. When I made a layout it always had a variety of media on it, and I may have went a little crazy. It really appealed to me in the no rules aspect. It really helped me grow and learn about about as a scrapbooker. This journey is one of the most important for a memory keeper. It helps you forage the way you end up telling your story, in the way you need to do. This is whether or not you yourself add media to your projects.

As I started growing and leaning towards cleaner layouts, I did less and less media. My products sitting lonely in my mixed media drawer.

Lately though I really have been itching to play around and get dirty. Literally. I think Mixed media is like riding a bike, once you get the hang of it and into the groove you get better with time.

Today I am going to be using the May Sorbet kit with add ons from the store to be making my Travelers Notebook. I wanted this size because I think sometimes it is a good place to start, a smaller size to fill up.

-kit-1_1_orig

Also I hope you take quick look of the new Travelers Notebook Kit that is being added to Clique Kits. It matches the main kit and has tons of goodies play with it your Travelers Notebooks or even adding to your main kit.

Let’s look at what I made. I am not going to lie, this spread was my nemesis!! A real labor of love. No matter what I did, I was not sure how I felt. When I am using mixed media products I really use my gut feeling to help guide through the creating process. I think this is quite different approach from just making a layout or other memory keeping project.

Here are some tips to remember about Mixed Media :

It almost always looks bad before it looks really good.  I think this is because layers is the key. Sometimes a stencil gets smudge a little, or a paint splatter is bigger than you thought.

When making my layout I had tried using the cut file Maryam had designed, and adding that right to the page.  It was just too much paper on all the paint I had added.  I actually used my cut file to trace the triangles on top of my paint. splotches.

These splotches are through my layout and I used Shimmerz Acri-tonez in hot pink (it dry so fast and I don’t have to add gesso before, which is nice when I don’t have extra steps.) and gold paint.

IMG_5148

When you mess up you can always cover it up.  Sometimes a stencil doesn’t leave a clear image, or you smudge paint before it dries.  When I make a mistake I always try to remember that I can always cover it up with an embellishment or photo. This helps take the pressure off so I don’t have to stress about it being perfect. Mixed Media is all about having fun and experimentation.

Also if you really screw things up, you can always start over again on a fresh new page or cover it with gesso. Since mixed media is about the layers adding gesso and another layer of paint or media it will add an unique twist to your spread.

On my spread I used a doily I had left over from last month’s kit and used it as a layer under my photo. I layered a piece of card stock with the Pretty Little Studio washi strips. I placed these over an area where my silkscreen didn’t transfer my gold paint very well.

IMG_5156

I love the way that tab from the exclusive printable looks under my photo with some hearts from Pink Fresh Studio. The gold mirror heart was in the Add on store, and these pieces are so cute. They really help tie in all the gold I used on the background.

Mixed Media is about art expression, use things you love.  When you love the techniques, colors, products, tools or embellishments, it will show on your spread. Playing and learning is part of mixed media, but in the end the things you love that you add to your project really set your page from just okie to a LOVE page.  You may not love every page you make, but using products and elements you love will give you pieces that you love too.

On the page I made I really was eyeing the Freckled Fawn clips. They are so bold and fun. They really make a statement. I layered them with a cut part from one of the papers from the Main Kit and a stamped image I popped off the page. I stamped the image, with the Pink Fresh Studios stamp set,  on white card stock and cut it out. Adding pop dots to give it dimension off the page and making the image more of the focal point. Especially with stamped or written phrases on the inside.

IMG_5153

Also layered under the clip was a gold doily from my stash, gold thread and some of the exclusive sequins for this month. They match this kit so well, and the flower sequins looked so cute inside my rainbow.

IMG_5152

I added some Pretty Little Studio block alphas to finish my title and finished this cluster up with a gold mirror heart.

My last tip for mixed media, is Have Fun and Play, Play, Play.  Mixed media is about expression and when you aren’t having fun it shows. If you aren’t having fun, you won’t want to come back to it later. Just let go and have fun playing.

Playing and practicing also makes a difference. It will help you get better and get a feel for the techniques you get quickly and the ones you need to work on if that is the media you want to use.

IMG_5151

These Maggie Holmes butterflies in the Add on section in the store are so fun. They worked perfectly with my spread because it’s about change. Embracing the change an flying high with it.

Here is a look at my full spread.  It’s not perfect, but in the journey of making this I really embraced it. I really kept trying until I got a look I was happy with. Even if I had to take up things off the page three or 4 times.

CK Field Notes Footer not staged.jpg

I hope this week you give some thought in how you can add some fun and play mixed media to you spreads. Even little things like adding some modeling paste to a journaling card, or splatter some color ink on white card stock before you start layering papers.

Don’t forget to mark your calendars for this weekend, for international Scrapbooking Day, May 6th. We will be hosting tons of amazing challenges to play along in. There will be lots of chatting, scrapbooking and prizes!!

Mixed Media Monday On Youtube: Playing along with the April Challenge

Aloha My Scrappy Friends!! It’s Hannah with you today. I am using the April “Jelly Bean” Kit to make this Pocket Page Spread today.

ck-apr17-kit4_orig

This pocket Page Spread I made for the April Challenge using Latina Crafter Stamps. I had a small almost 3X4 size alpha stamp. It is the perfect size for Pocket Page cards or smaller titles. From the minute I saw the stamp I know this was how I would use it. Let me tell you, it was fun, I had a hard time not using this stamp on every card in my spread.

CK Challenge PL

For my pocket page spread, I am doing it monthly. This means for me, I just think about filling pockets. I don’t worry about having two protectors per week. This means that some protectors have two or three days and some have more. This all depends on what is going on in my week. This time period I am documenting is March 1 and 2nd 2017. I am using Design A and then I add a 6X12 protector to go with the one side of the Design A. There was a lot going on at the beginning of the month and I also like to make sure I have enough journaling for my pictures.

I also like to really pretty cards in my pockets especially when I use a kit on my spreads. Using a kit helps keep my selections limited which I really need. I will way overdo it. This year I am really working on keeping it simple to make sure I focus on the stories and photos that happen throughout the month.

Even though I am using a kit, I still love to infuse me into the kit I am using. This April “Jelly Bean” Kit is so colorful it really inspired me to get creative. Mixed Media allows me to play and add to my kits and infuse me into my spreads. The amazing thing is you don’t have to do much with your mixed media to make it special to you.

I started off by printing off the exclusive printables from the April Kit. These printables are designed and coordinate perfectly with each kit.  I used this as my starting off point and what also inspired me.

I used white cardstock, cut into 3X4 size cards. I decided not to use Gesso to prime my cards, I knew I would try to stamp as well, I wanted my drying time to be shorter. I also wasn’t sure how this stamp would stamp on gesso, would it smudge? I didn’t want to take that chance. I knew I was going to keep my cards simple too. This often helps me decide whether priming the cards is necessary.

I chose to use watercolors. On one card I just spread the top with an orange color. I added small tiny flowers on both ends of the orange paint. These flowers were similar to the ones in the collection. When paint dried I used a black dye ink and stamped the word Joy in the middle.

IMG_3953

I cut the card down and backed it on the Bella Blvd Daily Details Paper. With my journaling, a roller date stamped on and a puffy sticker, this card is so cute and matches my spread.

I also mixed the exclusive designed pocket page cards in my spread as well. I loved this card with the hearts at the top.  It had the right amount of space to journal about the Blog Hop we had on March 1st.  I added some Freckled Fawn Enamel Dots next to the hearts for a little extra something and left the card alone.

IMG_3959

I have found with my pocket pages less is more.

For my other mixed media card I added half circles with watercolor on the bottom half of the card. I used the exclusive printable as inspiration. There was a similar card but I wanted to change up the colors and make them match more of what I had used. This is the cool thing about mixed media. You can tweak and alter your kit and make it work for you.

IMG_3961

I Used Joy again with my Latina Crafter Stamp. I stamped once in full ink and then continue stamping until the ink was all gone. This ombre look looks really cool on the different color paint.

After I finished the card I outlined it with my black pen and added this card with an image of a text message I had with a friend. This is a fun way to add conversations and interactions with family and friends without having a major picture.

IMG_3952

Throughout my spread I added lots of stamped words with my new Latina Crafter Stamp.  Seriously it was so much fun.  Added with this Freckled Fawn Foam word and some exclusive printables my coffee photo is really fun. It makes a simple photo and gives it some piazza.

IMG_3960

I also used the Stamp on my Photo that I had a longer story/journaling on in my pocket page spread. This is why I used a 6X12 protector. It took a bit to figure out the arrangement on the page but it was fun designing on a different size layout. I printed my journaling from my laptop in a funky typewriter font. this allowed me to add more journaling than I could write out. I also was wanting to use journaling I had right from my FB acct, which is a simple copy and paste for journaling. I had already wrote the words earlier, sometimes there really is no need to re write the journaling.

IMG_3948

I keep the 6X12 layout simple, with some epoxy sticker add ons and some printables.

IMG_3949

Art Studio: This is bliss

Hello! Donna here once again!
Will be sharing my second layout using the April kit, “Jellybean”.

ck_apr17_logo-final-012

I used the floral cut file again, using the same technique I did on my first layout I posted yesterday.

DSC_5230

I brushed gel medium inside the floral cut file, adhering them at the same time. After it has dried, I used my watercolors to color inside the cut files. I mixed various colors, based on the floral included in the embellishment pack.

DonnaEspiritu-CliqueKits-April-Jellybean-layout02aDonnaEspiritu-CliqueKits-April-Jellybean-layout02bDonnaEspiritu-CliqueKits-April-Jellybean-layout02e

Then I used one of the journal cards to mat the layers of photo and doily for a bit of height and some messy thread for a bit of texture. To make the white small alpha stickers stand out, I matted the alphas to one of the colorful patterned papers in the kit.

Geek Lab with Hannah

Blog Image_Geek Lab

Aloha!! It’s Hannah here with you today.  The fresh and bold colors in the “Jelly Bean” April Kit have me thinking about Spring. Where I live it’s still pretty green and damp. It has me dreaming about my flower bed from the summer and all the beautiful colors they wore proudly. I knew this kit and the exclusive flower cut file would fit perfectly together to make an awesome layout.

Maybe by making a layout about my flowers will entice them to grow faster! If only scrapbooking brought on the season change and made the weather behave?!! While I dream about wearing old sneakers and dirty garden gloves, lets take a look at what I created.

IMG_3751

I really wanted to go BOLD so I used my silhouette to cut the exclusive floral cut file with pattern paper. The cut file is really intricate so it really helps this busy paper pop. The flowers come alive. It will work well on my layout because I am using white cardstock that I made several stripes with dark grey acrylic paint. The color against the dark and white really help them stand out.

I cut one set of flowers big and left them open. I also cut a couple of other sets in plain white cardstock.  I like to use smooth cardstock with my cut files. I find they look better and the thicker quality helps them hold up better in the silhouette. These smaller sets I backed with some of my left over “Paint Me” patterned paper and some of the dotted vellum. I used some tiny staples in gold from my tiny attacher to attach and hold the paper together. I wanted to create shadows by attaching them this way. I wanted the cut file to lift up a bit from the paper to add dimension too.

To me this really helps makes an impact on a layout when you use dimension and shadows in your favor. The bright colors in this kit and paper really help with that as well.

I used 3 3×4 size photos that I matted with white cardstock. With all the color in the cut file and in my photos I didn’t want to go crazy. I also knew I would finish off the layout with some splatters of the Shimmerz Acri-tonez Paints.

IMG_3761

I added a couple of the cut aparts from the “Daily Details” Paper for some extra layers. I love the writing on them it’s so fun and said perfectly how I felt. The gold foil on some of the cards is gorgeous and I couldn’t help myself not to use that on this layout.

I lightly embellished this page. The color and intricacy of the cut file really helped fill the page up. I used a few of the Freckled Fawn foam word phrase stickers. They are really fun. I also added some of the Bella Blvd Puffy Stickers and Epoxy Stickers from the Clique Store.  These stickers add just the right amount of extra color to tie my layout together.

IMG_3762

For the title I used the Elle Studio White Alphas and one of the Heidi Swapp Acetate words in gold. I love when I have word phrases in my kits to help me with my title. I don’t really mind if I don’t have the most thought out title. As long as it helps capture the feelings I have when I see my photo that’s all that matters to me. I know I will have journaling somewhere on my layout eventually so my family and I can remember all my thoughts about these photos.

Though truth be told, I just really enjoy taking photos of my gorgeous flowers. They are all mine and they are beautiful! I just want to remember how beautiful they are, especially during the middle of the winter when it has been raining for ten days straight and you can see your breathe when you wake up in the morning. It’s times like this I want to remember there is color and beauty that grows right in my own back yard. I don’t need a fancy title this time for that!

IMG_3763

To finish off my layout I added Freckled Fawn enamel dots and shapes around my cut file. That is intact what I want my eye to go to first when I look at this layout. I added the year for a date with more of the White Alphas by Elles Studio. Since the date really isn’t important I don’t need it to stand out. I also finished by adding splatters with the Shimmerz Acri-tonez Paints. I just let the paint fall out of the bottle as I lightly squeezed it. I really love the look it gave adding them this way. The paint made really raised spots around my layout and have great dimension. I made sure I put my layout off to the side while it dried so the paint didn’t get touched, or settle down.

CK Full Layout Footer

I hope you are inspired today to create different looks using just one cut file. It really makes a cut file be versatile when you can get different looks just by changing a few things, like color, shape and what is behind the cut file itself.

Have a great day and I hope you are excited about playing with your April “Jelly Bean” Kit when it shows up at your door. When it does arrive be sure to tag us and share what you creating with your kit!!

Also Check Out my Process Video on the Clique Kits Youtube Channel for more details on how I made this fun layout.
