Art Studio: This is what life is about

Good morning friends. I hope you’re having a great week! Do you ever open up your new kit and get excited, thinking you know just the right photo to use? A photo that maybe you haven’t scrapped yet because you didn’t have any product that might work with the photo or theme of the photo? Well, that’s what happened to me with this kit. I immediately thought of the photo I had from the fair last summer. Edward and Sidney had the best time together and I had one particular photo that captured that moment…

I used a variety of patterns for the background of my layout. I added the transparency at the bottom of the layout to cover the wood grain paper. I love how it looks. And to add a little color to the heart pattern, I colored a few hearts with a pink marker to help blend the pattern in with the layout.

I used the green and blue strip paper to make a little collage of embellishments on the right-side of the layout.

Thanks for visiting today!

Clique Cards Spring Edition: Create your own background

Salutations everyone! I always love a challenge of creating my own backgrounds on my pages. When I first laid eyes on the Clique Cards Spring Edition, it was no exception – I had to create some background, especially with that gorgeous Altenew stamp set and I had some layouts in mind.

For my first page, I decided to cut large, narrow triangles to create a repeat pattern on the top and bottom of my page.

Being Awesome FN, @colortypes sophie @ cliquekits, #cliquekits #cliquecardsspringedition #papercraft #inspiration #DIY #scrapbooking

I love the bold effect this created and I went on to adhere my photo and embellishments. I thought a sprinkling of some of those lovely white sequins helped to soften the overall effect. We were at the museum when this photo was taken – I am grateful for the daily reminder from my kids on the importance of being curious and to learn continually.

For my second layout, I used the “hello” stamp from Altenew and covered the entire background with it. I decided to create an ombre effect, so it was certainly fun switching colors and stamping on the entire cardstock.

Hello 123 FN, @colortypes sophie @ cliquekits, #cliquekits #cliquecardsspringedition #papercraft #inspiration #DIY #scrapbooking

I thought it was appropriate to create a background of this nature for this picture in particular – one taken on the day we discovered that we have been blessed with Bub #3. We can’t wait for his/her arrival come this November! This page is very special for me, as it will be the first  layout for my third baby’s album. The embellishment found in the kit were also ideal for this page as I had the numbers 1, 2 and 3 in the kit as well as that lovely calendar diecut.

Thank you for joining me today. Here’s a tag to round it all off, as we celebrate our everyday (and also because I can’t seem to stop using all the lovely stuff in the kit. There’s so much!). Hooray!

Awesome mini-album

Hi all! Donna here again to share my last project using Clique cards: Spring Edition.

CK_Spring2015Cards4

For this post, I made a mini-album instead of cards. I used everything in the kit, as much as I can. BUT I still have lots of 6×6 papers in the pad left. Awesome!

Here is what I did

DonnaEspiritu-minia

DonnaEspiritu-mini2

I basically cut the color cardstocks into 4inx8in and then folded in half. I used several strings of DMC thread to bind the mini-album, stitched them together. Then I used half of a 6inx6in paper to cover the spine.

DonnaEspiritu-minib

Here’s a look at the pages inside

DonnaEspiritu-minic

I challenged myself not to use bulky embellishments for the inside pages,  just the stickers and ephemera included in the kit. Even if you put some photos inside, it will not be too bulky. I just love the colors and gold in this kit!

That’s about it for today, I hope you liked my project!
Thanks for dropping by!

Spring Card Kit

Hello Clique Kits friends. Marcia here, I have a few more cards to share with you using the Clique Kits Spring Card Kit. This kit is amazing!!! Gorgeous My Mind’s Eye On Trend papers and die-cuts, gold stickers, sequins, and an awesome stamp set from Altenew, and exclusive Clique Kits flair buttons. Take a look…

Hello

I used the Altenew stamp set here for the Hello and then fussy cut it out. I LOVE that the set has small text as well. Combined, they make truly eye-catching sentiments on cards. This stamp set is quickly becoming my favorite!

Hello_Sneak

I knew with all those pretty sequins, I would make a shaker card. I cut this gem with my Silhouette on gold cardstock. Using a couple layers of vellum to hold my sequins, I carefully stitched around the gem using gold thread. It sets off the gem pattern paper wonderfully!

Friends

A different Altenew sentiment from the same stamp set was used on this card, stamped and fussy cut out again. The kit comes with exclusive flair buttons and I used one on this card.

CK_Card_Friend_Detail

Everyone needs Birthday cards, right? With those gold My Mind’s Eye stickers in the kit, I couldn’t resist making a few birthday cards too.

One last card to share…. This time I used the Altenew stamp set to stamp on vellum and embossed it with gold embossing powder. The vellum softens the pattern paper beneath and really lets the sentiment shine.

Clique Cards Spring Edition: All Occasions Cards

Hello there everyone! Sophie here today to share some cards I made with the awesome Clique Cards Spring Edition. I love the refreshing color palette of this kit and the tons of stuff packed into it. So here are some cards I have created, which I kept flexible, so I can use them for different occasions.

Here’s the first, “Everything is Awesome”.

My Minds Eye Awesome Card FN, @colortypesink @cliquekits, #cliquekits #DIY #inspiration #ckcardspring

When I found out that a good friend was expecting her second child (one she has been waiting for), I was so thrilled and decided that a card was in order, especially one using that gorgeous piece of patterned paper from My Mind’s Eye with all those gold crosses! So loads of confetti, sequins and a gold banner to celebrate the occasion. Love the stamps in the set from Altenew. So much potential! I stamped the word “celebrate” using different tones of inks to create and ombre effect, before outlining the word in gold. While I made it to celebrate a pregnancy, I think it will work well for a birthday or happy event too (just tweak the number accordingly!).

My Minds Eye Celebrate 2 FN, @colortypesink @cliquekits, #cliquekits #DIY #inspiration #ckcardspring

For the next card, I kept it simple. I cut strips of paper and created a 3D bloom before adhering the circular die cut “love” in the middle. I also layered vellum on top of my cardstock to soften the colors.

My Minds Eye Love Bloom Card FN, @colortypesink @cliquekits, #cliquekits #DIY #inspiration #ckcardspring

Finally, to toss things up a little, I made a gift tag. See that rosette? I used the glassine bag found in the packaging to create it. Nothing like upcycling! I think those puffy gold crown and moustache stickers are reminiscent of photo booths that are so popular at parties these days. So on they went, for a touch of fun.

My Minds Eye Best Day Tag FN, @colortypesink @cliquekits, #cliquekits #DIY #inspiration #ckcardspring

Thanks for stopping by and I look forward to sharing you other fun stuff I created with this wonderful kit in my next post!

April Designer in the Spotlight – Tasnim Ahmed

promcommittee

Hello everyone!  We are so excited to bring you this months Designer in the Spotlight Tasnim Ahmen.  We had the privilege of meeting Tasnim at CHA Winter 2015.  We were walking along the show floor when we spotted her beautiful Altenew booth.  The booth walls were covered in this beautiful textured wall paper and it was so clean, simple and classic.  We instantly fell in love with her and of coarse her stamps!  We ended up adding two of her stamp sets to our kits this year and also added some to the Clique Kits shop.

Tasnim took some time to answer some questions for us today and also created some stunning cards using our Spring Card Kit!  So sit back, grab your beverage of choice and say Hello to Tasnim!

Tasnim_pic

Tasnim attained her bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Massachusetts Amherst in 2010. Even though arts and crafts has always been a part of her life, she only discovered stamping in 2011, and started her blog Cards & Bookmarks the following year. She soon realized that she had the potential to introduce designs/greetings relevant to cultures that were not represented in mainstream crafting space, and thus the research and planning for Altenew began. She is committed to bringing innovative designs based on lifestyles from around the world.

In addition to running Altenew, and being a full-time mom to her three year old daughter, Tasnim is a current student at Studio Arabiya, an online institute based in Cairo, Egypt. She also teaches weekly classes and leads the girls youth group at her local community center. Apart from card making and designing stamps, she enjoys hiking, running, and learning languages.

  1. Can you tell us a little bit about your creative process?

My creative thinking process has changed from the time that I started designing cards. At first I used to constantly deliberate about designs, colors, and how to come up with crafty techniques.  Then I discovered Pinterest, and instantly it became my go-to-place for inspiration. I remember spending hours on a card at times, playing around with my elements and figuring out how to arrange them. But now when I need to make a card, I take a quick look at my Pinterest Inspiration Board, and try not to spend more than half an hour in completing my project. Usually, a certain picture that I pinned catches my eyes, and I use either the colors, the design layout, the elements, or the general vibe from the picture, and go about translating that on to my card.

When I’m designing stamps, I first look for inspiration; it could be from nature, museum catalogs, fabric design, home décor, places I’ve traveled, or things that I want to make that do not exist in the market yet. Once an idea forms, I draw the designs on paper, scan it, and set to work on drawing in Illustrator, using my scanned images as a guide.

  1. Where and when are you most creative?

I think I am most creative when I am under the stress of having to meet a deadline! I feel like my best creations are always the ones I made last minute! During one of our Altenew releases, I woke up at 3am, and made six cards in the following four hours. The release was scheduled at 9am! Late nights are when my creative juices flow, and that is when I design Altenew stamps.

  1. What are some of your must have supplies?

Paper cutter, Score Board, micro-tip scissors, stamps, inks, foam tape and heat embossing supplies.

  1. Who are some of your influences?

In my card designing journey, the works of Darlene DeVries, Laura Bassen, Agnieszka Malyszek, and Debby Hughes, have influenced me greatly, to just name a few.

In the case of Altenew, Stephanie Wincott has definitely inspired me. I heard of her just days before the launch of “Clearly Besotted Stamps”. Back then, I was toying with the idea of starting a stamp company, but once I saw what she was about to embark upon, I was quite determined. I eventually contacted her and was able to ask her for advice. She was very helpful, and kindly shared her insight.

  1. 3 things people probably do not know about you.
  • I used to be a BIG Anime fan. I have watched so much Anime during one of my college years that I can now understand/speak a bit of Japanese.
  • I absolutely love Mathematics. Recently, I planned on allocating ½-1 hour daily to solve Math problems. Ahem, I still need to get started on that plan!
  • I have yet to learn how to swim, and ride a bike. Added to my long to-do list.
  1. Favorite:

  • Book

Agatha Christie’s detective novels

  • Movie

Howl’s Moving Castle, Marvel Movies

  • Candy

Fruit Roll-ups

  • Drink

Black tea

  • Color

Yellow

  • TV Show

Running man (Korean variety show). It is a bit silly sometimes, but it makes me laugh, which is a good thing

  1. Who are some of your favorite designers in the industry?

Agnieszka Malyszek, Iwona Palamountain, Jocelyn Olson, Cristina Kowalczyk, Amy Gray among many others!

  1. What inspired you to design your first stamp set?

The first stamp set that I designed actually never made it to production. It was a set of Eid Greetings along with a geometric design. Both the greetings and the design element speak volumes about what inspired me to start Altenew in the first place. One of the themes in our stamp designs is drawing inspiration from artwork from the past, and that geometric element was based on a Persian Enamel design. As for the greetings, whenever I made cards for Eid, I wished there were stamps for this occasion, and the simple solution was to design my own set! J

  1. Where did the name of your company Altenew come from?

Our first choice for a company name was Now & Then. I liked how this name was related to the theme I just spoke of. However, it was decided that the name needed to be unique. Thinking on words related to ‘Now & Then’ I came up with ‘Old and New’ which then turned to Altenew. A little knowledge of German helped the process as alt is German for old.

Here is a look at what Tasnim created with our Spring Card Kit which is still available in the Clique Kits shop.  This kit comes with a full 4×6 stamp set from Altenew that you are just going to fall in love with!
