Hello Clique Kits fans! We are so excited to be bringing you this months Designer in the Spotlight! Juliana Michaels is here with us this month not only as our November Designer in the Spotlight but she is also the November challenge sponsor and our November Guest Designer! We are so excited to have her sharing with us all month!
Juliana Michaels, the artist behind 17turtles, has had a love affair with creating and designing for years. When she first discovered scrapbooking over 15 years ago, it gave her a way to combine her two loves to form a creative outlet that brings her so much joy and happiness. This past year, she began creating her own digital cut files to use with her Silhouette Cameo on her scrapbook pages and other craft projects. She has now opened 17turtles as a way to share her digital design creations with others. For more ideas, inspiration and tutorials about using her cut files, you can visit her blog at www.17turtles.com. This month Juliana has created some custom digital cut files to go along with the Clique Kits November kit Homecoming! You can find these files in the 17turtles shop HERE and use promo code CK17TURTLES25 to take 25% off your purchase till the end of November!
Thank you so much to Juliana for joining us this month! We look forward to your Guest Designer post coming up on November 15th! Now how about a little Q & A from the amazing designer behind all the fabulous cut files we all love from 17turtles!
Tell us a little bit about your creative process.
When I am creating a scrapbook page, I usually start with the photos and the story I want to share about them. The photos then guide me in selecting what products I want to create with. Occasionally, I have a technique that I want to try and I will begin with that and then find photos that are a good fit. My process really seems to revolve around the photos.
Where and when are you most creative?
I’m my most creative in my craft room. I feel very blessed to have a designated space in my home to do my designing and crafting. The time of day varies, but I usually find that I’m the most creative in the morning and in the late afternoon.
What are some of your must have supplies?
I really can’t live without patterned paper, cardstock, cardstock stickers, Le Pen markers (for journaling), double sided foam tape, my manual cutting tools (an X-acto knife, cutting mat and metal edged ruler and scissors) and of course my Silhouette Cameo. I love to play with other fun embellishments, but I really love what you can do with some paper, scissors and glue!
How long have you been designing for the paper crafting industry and can you tell us about the companies you currently design for?
I started scrapbooking in 1997 and began designing for the paper crafting industry in 2008. I feel very blessed to have had the opportunity to design for some of the top scrapbook manufacturers in the industry. Currently I’m designing for BoBunny, Elle’s Studio and 3 Birds Design.
3 things people probably do not know about you
These are all rather random, but here you go: 1. I grew up in a small rural town of less than 200 people. 2. I was on the swim team in high school and college. 3. I’m a Physical Therapist and love working with the elderly.
Book – The Dresden Files (Everyone last one of them.)
Movie – When Harry Met Sally (This is totally dating me!)
Candy – Snickers (Although I really prefer cookies, cakes or pies over candy.)
Drink – Dr. Pepper, however I’ve given up drinking it everyday and replaced it with Highlander Grogg Coffee which is super yummy.
Music – Whatever is on the radio, with the exception of country music.
Color – I can’t pick just one. I love color! However, purple, orange, green, yellow and brown all make me happy.
TV Show – The Blacklist
How long have you been creating cut files and what inspired you to get started?
I’ve had a love affair with creating and designing for years. When I first discovered scrapbooking over 15 years ago, it gave me a way to combine creating and designing to form a creative outlet that brings me so much joy and happiness. This past year, I began creating my own digital cut files to use with my Silhouette Cameo on my scrapbook pages and other craft projects. I then decided to open my shop as a way to share these designs with the rest of the crafting world.
Where did the name for your company 17turtles come from?
I get this question a lot and it’s really quite simple. I love turtles and my birthday is on May 17th. Years ago when I first started looking for a name for my blog, the idea of combining these popped into my head and it stuck.
Thank you so much for sharing a little bit about yourself with us Juliana and we look forward to more from you and 17turtles later this month! To see more from Juliana and 17turtles please head on over to her blog and check out the 17turtles shop!
